I started quilting in 1995 as a way to make blankets for my three girls. I had seen a quilt someone made and thought, “I believe I can make that. It looks pretty simple!” Thankfully, it was a simple block quilt.
I bought some supplies at our local Walmart and began teaching myself how to quilt. Six years later, I had three twin-size quilts ready to give my girls for Christmas. It took me a while to finish them because I was learning as I went, working a full-time job, and taking care of my family—but those quilts started a lifelong love of quilting.
Over the years, I found books that inspired me to keep learning and trying new techniques. I moved from simple block quilts to strip quilts, then to half-square triangles, and continued building my skills from there.
Like many families, ours eventually spread out across the United States. At the time, my mother lived in Montana, a long way from my home in Kansas. She purchased a 13-inch quilting machine that she could put on a frame to finish her own quilts. She would tell me about the quilts she was making and how much fun she was having with her machine.
In 2013, I took a trip to Montana to visit her, and she let me quilt a top on her machine. I was hooked! I loved free-motion quilting and eventually decided I needed a quilting machine of my own.
Before getting my longarm, I had been finishing my own quilts for years, first by tying them and later by quilting them on my domestic sewing machine. In 2015, I began quilting on a 21-inch quilting machine and later added computerized quilting to the mix. In 2022, I began completing quilts for customers.
One of the things I especially enjoy is working with new quilters. I know firsthand what it is like to learn as you go, and I understand that finishing your first quilt top is a big accomplishment!
Every quilter is different. Some are thrilled to finish the top and are ready to hand it over to someone who can take care of everything else. Others want me to complete the quilting so they can square and bind their quilt themselves. Either way, I’m happy to help you get your quilt across the finish line and feel proud of what you’ve created.
Today, I quilt using a Q’nique 21-inch Pro with computerized quilting capabilities. I offer both edge-to-edge and custom quilting, as well as the option of machine-sewn binding.
And if your quilt has a few issues when you bring it to me, don’t worry—that’s part of the learning process. During our consultation, we can talk about what needs to be corrected. I can make certain corrections for an additional charge, or I can walk you through what needs to be done so you can make the corrections yourself and learn something that will help with your future quilts.
For me, quilting isn’t just about finishing a quilt. It’s about helping each quilter turn the top they worked so hard to create into a finished quilt they can use, give, and be proud of for years to come.
